Why I switched to an aluminum boat

We spend lots of time in our boats. They’re an essential part of a successful career. Because of that we don’t make radical changes from one year to another, not without considerable thought, anyway.
However, sometimes considerable thought leads us to make a radical change. That, despite the fact that nearly every bass boat made is first class. New manufacturing techniques, advances in design engineering, safety improvements and input from top pros has made for a world of difference — a positive difference — when you compare older boats with newer ones.
With all of that in mind I made a switch this year, one that puts me in the minority. I’m going to fish and compete out of an aluminum boat.
A continuing theme that runs through my columns is that you have to be yourself and fish your way. I made a mess of 2017 because I didn’t do that. I’m not going to repeat that mistake again.
The truth is that we all have strengths, and we all have weaknesses. Recognizing that is an important step towards success. My strength is shallow water. That’s where I’m at my best, and it’s where I should be when the chips are down.
An aluminum boat suits my needs perfectly. A shallow draft and a tough body make a big difference to me. I want (need) to be fishing back in thin water that’s choked with structure and cover. There’s no way you can fish like that unless your boat floats in very little water and unless it can handle the occasional collision with a big rock or a hard scrape against a tree limb without serious damage.
Before I made the switch I checked out the pros and cons of aluminum by talking to several anglers who’s opinion I respect. I went to Xpress and asked to test one of their rigs. That test was an experience for the guy who went out with me. I think I terrified him.
At one point he wanted to know what the heck was going on. I told him I wanted to know what the boat would do at the extreme and that the only way to do that was to get a little crazy. He seemed to accept that, but his knuckles still showed white as he gripped the handle and the gunnel on his side of the boat. I pretended to be concerned for him, but inside I was laughing and having a ball.
But, let me tell you, that ride was an experience for me, too. I ran that boat as hard, or harder, than I would run a boat in a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament. Hard turns and twists didn’t phase it, and it was as stable as any boat I’ve ever been in. But what really impressed me the most was its hole shot. The speed at which it came up and got on plane is amazing.
For 2018 I’m going to be fishing out of an Xpress X21 Team aluminum boat powered by a 250 hp, four stroke V MAX SHO Yamaha.
That’s not the most important thing I’ve tried to say in this column, though. Every angler needs to look around and make product and equipment decisions based on their needs. It’s not about what I do, or about what any other pro does. And it’s certainly not about impressing your buddies at the local club. It’s about what you need. In the end that’ll make the biggest improvement in your catch.

Aluminum vs. Fiberglass Bass Boats

I’m routinely asked about the differences between aluminum and fiberglass fishing boats from prospective buyers. Today’s boats are exceptionally well built and the quality of aluminum boats is rapidly catching up to an area that had been home to only fiberglass in years past.
New techniques in boat building on the aluminum side of things has allowed for more rounded edges, more advanced coatings and paint and creature comforts that fiberglass manufacturers had been utilizing for years.
Why aluminum?
In the old days of aluminum, techniques for symmetry, flotation and features were lacking. Aluminum used to be the low-priced spread with wooden decks and lower grade components but that is quickly changing.
Competition among leading brands like Lund, Xpress, G3, Crestliner and Ranger has made that possible. Better ride, level flotation with sound-defeating foam and rough coats for sides and gunnels have changed the game. Better fit and finish plus better materials has also helped.
Boat width is an essential ingredient of today’s new aluminum boats and with width comes stability and a better riding surface. Deck space on today’s aluminums is much more spacious and fishable.
Tighter specifications and the use of tight tolerance jigs and dies in the manufacturing process now has aluminum boats with pad-style running surfaces and better handling ability; both while running and cornering. Component parts are also built with tighter tolerances so the overall ride and feel of most new aluminums is firm and comfortable. Old-style aluminums were narrower and could be tippy and were rougher riding than a brahma bull.
Today’s aluminums are still lightweight but also build to withstand the pounding of big lakes and rivers. Intricate stringer and support systems are styled off of their fiberglass cousins and are built to be quiet and take a pounding on most models. High-performance aluminum boats can be built and are sporting up to 250-horsepower outboards with jackplates and shallow-water anchors on the transom.
Depending on the type of bottom you are looking for, V-Hull or bass boat-style will allow the purchaser to pick big water rides most suitable to the style of fishing they do most often.
Aluminum buyers have a lot of choices and the type and size of the fishery most visited should be taken into account. Buying aluminum doesn’t mean you are getting less of a boat. Long-lasting paint schemes makes this “new” affordable aluminum a great purchase for both the family and tournament pro.
They also have inshore, hunting and mid-range level boat packages that can stand up to on-the-water activity. Duck hunters have known for years just how good aluminum boats handle even the toughest of conditions and with tiller steering.
Costs of the new aluminum boats are creeping up a bit in recent years as more features and amenities are added but they are still less expensive compared to fiberglass based on an apples-to-apples comparison.
Why fiberglass?
Fiberglass boats have been the go-to boats for tournament anglers for years. Some of that is based on performance attributes but can also be as a result of pro tournaments and pro angler endorsement as well.
Fiberglass is a flexible and strong material that can be formed by the use of a mold to build boats. It has been a mainstay in high-performance fishing boats since the late 60s and continues to improve. Better resins and woven—the matting used for strength—is engineered specifically for boats today. Better hull designs—the running surface of the boats—have also become much better with carefully designed strakes and chine contours for both more speed and stability, even at high speeds. Reverse chines on some models actually push the water away from the boat allowing for a cleaner planing capability.
In the early days, the technology of forming fiberglass came out of the automotive field and was migrated to boat building. Specific resins combined with the woven varies by manufacturer and each one has a different process for building their boats. Automation has made each boat more standardized by weight and dimension and flex points have been strengthened with new composite materials like multi-layer fiberglass blocks and other materials that provide strength but also will not absorb water like wood in older models. Many new boats even have fiberglass transoms.
![[Image: 6_5610583.jpg]](https://s3media.247sports.com/Uploads/Assets/583/610/6_5610583.jpg)
Typically in fiberglass boats, there are no sharp edges inside or along the gunnels. Slick finishes can be customized to just about every color in the rainbow and gel coats that protect those finishes continue to evolve too. A properly maintained fiberglass boat can look like new even after years of use if sealed with a good fiberglass sealer. Many anglers do not know that even the best clear can be porous and dirt can harm the finish. A good cleaner followed with a sealer can eliminate oxidation and fading.
Fiberglass models like Ranger, Nitro, Bass Cat and Phoenix continue to listen to their pros and customers and one of the last bastions of conquest is the inside of the gunnels of the boat. Modular tackle storage, better rod boxes and even ventilation systems are add-ons in recent years.
Fiberglass options will, on average, cost more too.
What material is best for me?
A good rule of thumb for purchase is dividing the cost into how many times you get to go fishing. That quick formula will help determine what type of boat is best for you. Two things happen with this approach: It balances the time on the water with the amount of money it takes to get on it and it gives you and excuse to go fishing more to justify the cost.
I recommend you buy as much boat as you can afford if money is an issue. Nothing is worse than buying a boat and not having the budget to use it. With that said, I suggest getting as much trolling motor, electronics and the best batteries you can afford with the purchase no matter what material your boat is made from.
Buying a boat is a major purchase. Do your research and don’t just look at how it looks but rather look at how it functions for your type of fishing. You will be

Choosing the best pitch and diameter propeller for your boat is tough enough (read Outboard Expert: The Right Propeller, to find out how it’s done), but to make things even more complex you’ll also have to choose the best material: aluminum or stainless-steel. And yes, it does matter. Performance, efficiency, reliability, and overall cost are all factors that come to bear, and making the wrong choice can have a pretty dramatic effect on your boating experience. So, how will you decide? Let’s find out.
![[Image: boat-propellers-630x414.jpg]](http://images.boats.com/resize/wp/2/files/2015/03/boat-propellers-630x414.jpg)
ALUMINUM PROPELLER PRO – They’re less expensive, often to the tune of hundreds of dollars. In fact, in many cases the aluminum version will be half the cost.
ALUMINUM PROPELLER CON – Aluminum just isn’t all that tough when it comes to physical contact, so an aluminum prop regularly exposed to brushes with sandbars, small rocks, or even muddy bottoms will get dinged, damaged, and worn down in no time.
STAINLESS-STEEL PROPELLER PRO – Stainless-steel propellers are far more durable. They will last virtually forever, unless you strike something hard enough to cause damage. So you could end up buying two or three aluminum “wheels” when one made of stainless-steel would have lasted at least as long.
STAINLESS-STEEL PROPELLER CON – In some cases, that extra strength can be problematic. If you strike something hard those blades simply won’t give, and the forces get transmitted right into the lower unit. If the striking is hard enough, the damage that results could require costly repairs—far more costly than just buying a new propeller.
ALUMINUM PROPELLER PRO – There’s a huge range of aluminum props out there, for all but the largest horsepower ranges. No matter what shape or type of boat you have, it’s virtually guaranteed there’s an aluminum propeller made to be the proper fit. Wider bladed models designed for pontoon boats, four-bladed models designed to improve hole-shot or maximize trim on bass boats—no matter how specialized you get, there’s probably a model out there that fits the bill.
ALUMINUM PROPELLER CON – There’s one big exception: if you need a vented propeller, you’re out of luck. Vented props have holes behind the blade which introduce bubbles to the blades, adding turbulence and allowing the propeller to spin a bit faster. It’s a helpful feature for boats that may have difficulty getting onto plane, since it allows the engine to turn at higher RPMs as power is applied.
STAINLESS-STEEL PROPELLER PRO – Stainless props provide better performance, because their blades flex less. In fact, it’s quite common for a stainless-steel propeller (all other things being equal) to out-perform an aluminum propeller by as much as five MPH at top-end, and two to three MPH at cruising speeds.
STAINLESS-STEEL PROPELLER CON – Historically, better performance was the main selling-point for stainless-steel as the material of choice. It should be noted, however, that with new alloys and casting techniques, the difference isn’t as dramatic today. In fact, a well designed and built aluminum propeller can, in some cases, out-perform an average or dated stainless-steel design.

After the chemical or electrochemical polishing, then the anodizing treatment, thealuminum products will obtain a smooth and bright layer of oxide film, with a high transparency, at this time, the aluminum alloy surface is easy to obtain various colors by dyeing. In the field of industry, the anodizing treatment or chemical oxidation methods are becoming more and more widely used, it makes aluminum alloy profiles to obtain a layer of oxide film, and to achieve a purpose of protection and decoration.
aluminum sheet supplier
The damage of aluminum alloy anode oxide film will affect the use of the products, the dust deposition and humidity are the main reasons that cause the corrosion of aluminum alloys, in particular, the sulfides in the air are more likely to corrode the aluminum alloys. The surface of the oxide film must be cleaned regularly to extend its service life, in general, the period of clean is six months, it also can depend on the pollution degree of the environment.
The cleaning method can be determined by the damage degree and size of the oxide film, for small-size aluminum profile, it is usually wiped gently by hand, and for the large-size one, we must dissolve the deposits. After cleaning, washing by the mild water that containing a proper content of lubricant or neutral soap, or using the fiber brush to remove attached dust. Do not use sandpaper, wire brushes, or other friction tools, and do not use acid or alkali detergen, so as not to damage the anodic oxide film.

Why do many horse trailer manufacturers use mostly steel or aluminium or a combinat

Why do many of the large, well known horse trailer manufacturers use mostly steel, and/or a combination of both?
I believe the answer lies, not so much in benefits of one over the other, but in the history and development of the horse trailer industry itself.
Back in the late seventies and early eighties, horse trailer manufacturers such as Sooner Trailers, Featherlite horse trailers, and Four Star horse trailers, began searching for alternate materials to replace steel since steel horse trailers were quickly deteriorating from rust. Since rusted horse trailers were generally everywhere horse trailer owners went, it didn't take much to convince consumers to switch to something better.
After many materials were considered - Sooner and Merhow trailers had built some of their horse trailer models with a product called FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plywood). Others such as Bison Horse Trailers experimented with all fiberglass - aluminum was the ultimate chosen material, and all-aluminum trailers quickly grew.
What horse owners didn't know were the negatives and dangers of using aluminum in the frame, sidewalls, floor and roof - that it was a more brittle material, would shear and tear when stressed beyond its capacity, and that it conducted heat. These negatives were not readily apparent, and the ability to research construction materials of horse trailers was not as easy as it is now. What most consumers basically did know about aluminum was that it didn't rust - and that seemed to be enough.
![[Image: 2014_Kingston_Trailers_Inc._Classic_Elit...HhCuhh.jpg]](http://d34ra0wvwxc5ex.cloudfront.net/emv7PN/8Novux/2014_Kingston_Trailers_Inc._Classic_Elite_All_Aluminum_Horse_Trailer_HhCuhh.jpg)
One of the negatives that was apparent to the manufacturers, and worried them, was the high cost of aluminum. However, the high costs eventually worked in their favor - the market was ready to spend more for a supposedly better product, and the high cost gave consumers the impression that it was a superior trailer. It costs a lot more therefore, it must be better.
Once the "all-aluminum" horse trailers hit the market full force, the market quickly perceived that the all-aluminum trailer was a high quality, premium product. Therefore, horse trailers such as the models built by Sooner trailer manufacturing, Featherlite trailers, and Four Star trailers were perceived as being top of the line, not realizing that the extra expense was directly attributed to the higher cost of aluminum, not necessarily, because it was a better product.Because of this consumer perception, combined with the rapid market acceptance of the all-aluminum trailer, and the alternative being rusting steel, many existing manufacturers switched over to aluminium, such as Sundowner, Merhow, Cherokee, and Bison. Through the years, many new start ups opted to build all-aluminum horse trailers such as Exiss, Eby, Adam, and Gore for the same reasons.
Of course, it is true that all-aluminum trailers are not equal - some are better than others are. Companies such as Sooner, Featherlite, Exiss, and Four Star will vary in quality and design according to the company's construction and design philosophy. The real issues to look at are the problems inherent in the aluminum material itself.
Pound for pound, aluminum used in most horse trailers is only 1/3 the strength of steel, so when it is used in the frame, this has to be taken into account. Manufacturers often have to boost the amount of aluminum used in the horse trailer floor and frame to get the equal strength of a steel frame. This is why some of your better "all-aluminum horse trailers, such as 4 Star, will be the same weight, or sometimes heavier as a similar model steel built trailer. Where aluminum often fails the consumer and their horses is in the interior dividers. Since aluminum is weaker by about a 1/3 from that of an "equal in size" steel divider, it will fail quicker under stress. When aluminum fails, it shears and tears.

Aluminum products has many advantages, such as good corrosion resistance, lightweight and light intensity and so on. aluminum tanker has a large capacity, and it can save fuel and reduce tire wear when no-load drive. Energy saving can bring direct economic benefits to aluminum tanker, so the aluminum tanker is more advantages than the steel tanker.
aluminum supplier
1. more safe
Aluminum tanker is lighter than the steel tanker about 4.9 tons, the lighter upper tanker parts reduce the gravity of vehicle, make the vehicle more stable when driving, and a tire with a good abrasion resistance can greatly reduce the probability of blow-out. Aluminum material has a good electric conductivity, and the static electricity is not easy to accumulate, if the aluminum tanker collided or tip over, it will not produce sparks when drilling, and it eliminate the potential safety hazard.
2. more durable
Aluminum has a layer of dense alumina film and a strong anti-oxide ability, it can effectively prevent the erosion of atmospheric and moisture, it will not rust and pollute the petroleum product. Aluminum tanker also has a long service life of 15 to 20 years, with a smooth and beautiful appearance.
3.more environmental
Aluminum alloy can be recycled, and the recycled aluminum alloy material has no difference with the original aluminum alloy material in performance, it can reduce the waste of resources and energy consumpt
