The International Alloy Designation System is the most widely accepted naming scheme for wrought alloys. Each alloy is given a four-digit number, where the first digit indicates the major alloying elements, the second — if different from 0 — indicates a variation of the alloy, and the third and fourth digits identify the specific alloy in the series. For example, in alloy 3105, the number 3 indicates the alloy is in the manganese series, 1 indicates the first modification of alloy 3005, and finally 05 identifies it in the 3000 series.

    1000 series are essentially pure aluminium with a minimum 99% aluminium content by weight and can be work hardened.
    2000 series are alloyed with copper, can be precipitation hardened to strengths comparable to steel. Formerly referred to as duralumin, they were once the most common aerospace alloys, but were susceptible to stress corrosion cracking and are increasingly replaced by 7000 series in new designs.
    3000 series are alloyed with manganese, and can be work hardened.
    4000 series are alloyed with silicon. Variations of Aluminum-silicon alloys intended for casting (and therefore not included in 4000 series) are also known as silumin.
    5000 series are alloyed with magnesium, and offer superb corrosion resistance, making them suitable for marine applications. Also, 5083 alloy has the highest strength of not heat-treated alloys.
    6000 series are alloyed with magnesium and silicon. They are easy to machine, are weldable, and can be precipitation hardened, but not to the high strengths that 2000 and 7000 can reach. 6061 alloy is one of the most commonly used general-purpose aluminium alloys.
    7000 series are alloyed with zinc, and can be precipitation hardened to the highest strengths of any aluminium alloy (ultimate tensile strength up to 700 MPa for the 7068 alloy).

1000 series: representative alloy is 1050, 1060, 1070; It is also known as pure aluminum, and it belongs to a series with the highest amount of aluminum in all series, and the purity can reach over 99.00%. 2000 series: representative alloy has 2011, 2017, 2024, 2A12 (LY12); It is commonly known as "hard aluminum", which is a heat-treatable and strengthened aluminum alloy of al-cu-mg system. Copper and magnesium are the main alloy elements, and copper can improve the strength and hardness of the alloy. It has high modulus of elasticity, good weldability, general corrosion resistance and obvious aging properties. Anodic oxidation treatment, coating method or surface coated aluminum layer is often used to improve its corrosion resistance. 2000 series belong to the aviation aluminum, is used to make all kinds of high load of parts and components, such as plane frame parts, skin, frame, ribs, SPAR, rivets and other working parts below 150 ℃; It is also widely used in the production of sensor parts.

3000 series: the representative alloy is mainly 3003; Manganese is the main element, the content is between 1.0-1.5%, the anti-rust function is better. It can be used in flying machine oil seamless tube (3003 alloy), can (3004 alloy) and other fields.

4000 series: represents alloy 4032; It is mainly silicon, which belongs to a series of high silica content, which is usually between 4.5 and 6.0%, with low melting point and good corrosion resistance. Often used in construction, mechanical parts forging materials and welding materials.

5000 series: the representative alloy is 5052, 5056, 5083, 5754; The main elements are magnesium, and magnesium content is between 3-5%, which is called aluminum magnesium alloy. It belongs to heat treatment unreinforced aluminum alloy. Magnesium can significantly improve the strength of aluminum without reducing its plasticity. It has good corrosion resistance and weldability, and its strength is high after welding. It has great corrosion resistance to seawater and industrial environment. The main features are low density, high tensile strength, high elongation and good fatigue resistance. It is used for the welding parts of ships, ships, automobile and aircraft plate, communication microwave equipment, test and fixture mechanical parts, rust preventive equipment, etc. Extrusions are often used in areas such as optical lenses.

6000 series: the representative alloy is 6061, 6063, 6082, 6005; Mainly contains two elements, magnesium and silicon department alloy extrusion is good, has a medium strength, high corrosion resistance, which has the best comprehensive performance and fuel economy, applies to have a certain strength requirements and high resistance to corrosion of all kinds of industrial structures, such as manufacturing truck, tower building, vessel, trolley, railway vehicle, furniture, machinery parts, precision mold manufacturing, electronic components and precision instruments, SMT solder, PC board vehicle electronics and so on.

7000 series: representative alloy is 7050, 7075; It mainly contains zinc. Also belongs to aviation series, commonly known as "super hard aluminum", is one of the most powerful aluminum alloys; With high cutting and high wear resistance, the strength is far better than soft steel; Has the general corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties and the anodic reaction, on behalf of the purpose of aerospace, mould processing, mechanical equipment, fixture, especially used in the manufacture of aircraft structure and other requirements of high strength high stress structure.
