I have it on my windows to block the exterior light on the high school across the street. They used to have very nice sweet gum trees that blocked the light, but they cut them down about 5 years ago and never replanted. The light shines straight in my eyes when I'm in bed, so now I have aluminum foil on the windows.
You'll see it all over the Southern US -- it's a cheap and effective method of blocking strong, direct sunlight and keeping rooms from overheating. It's also a great way of darkening a room if you're a day sleeper.
