Hello,
I'm pushing through the brilliant book "Industrial Power System Grounding Design Handbook" by Dunki-Jacobs and Co. In it, the authors indicate that copper is endothermic (absorbs energy when converting from solid to liquid) and aluminum is exothermic (releases energy when converting from solid to liquid).
They claim that due to these differences equipment with internal aluminum construction has a much greater potential for destructive energy release during an arc fault vs. copper construction. Does anyone account for this difference in their analysis of systems? The program I use for arc flash evaluation does not give me an option for copper vs. aluminum windings in the distribution transformers so I can't compare & contrast material types for IE levels. For panelboards I do have the ability to adjust for material type but it doesn't appear to make a difference for IE levels based on a quick sample study I just did.
Thoughts? Is material type a consideration that needs to be addressed? I believe the answer is no but wanted the groups opinion.
Please help.

Hello,
Okay, so you know how cheap aluminum is considered in applications such as pipes, soda cans, plates, etc? So why are Lian Li and other cases magically 2x-3x more expensive than their sheet metal competitors? Is the manufacturing process the big difference in cost? Btw, what IS sheet metal? What element?
As for a plexiglass case, is there such a thing as an anti-static spray or large clear sticker you could put over the plexi? I like the aesthetics of a clear case, but static buildup I don't want. Where do emissions go when theres no metal to "absorb" it? While we're talking about clear stickers, wouldn't it be sweet to have a blue tinted plexi case?
Please help.

Aluminum plates for tank cars are mainly 5 series and 6 series related products. The 5052 aluminum plate is al-mg alloy aluminum plate, which is the most widely used type of anti-rust aluminum with high strength and corrosion resistance. However, it can not be strengthened by heat treatment, and the plasticity is still good in the case of semi-cold hardening, and low in the case of cold hardening, which can be polished.
The magnesium alloy in 5083 aluminum plate has high strength, heat treated alloy, good machinability, corrosion resistance and welding performance. It is widely used in traffic vehicles, such as ships, planes, vehicles and pressure vessels (liquid tanks, refrigerated vehicles, refrigerated containers).
The 5754 aluminum plate is a typical alloy of al-mg alloy due to its medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability and easy processing. In foreign countries, 5754 aluminum alloy plates with different heat treatment conditions are the main materials used in automobile manufacturing (car door, mold, seal) and canning industry.
The 6061 aluminum plate has medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, good machining and anodizing coloring. Because it contains a small number of Cu, its strength is higher than 6063, and its quenching sensitivity is higher than 6063. After extrusion, air quenching cannot be achieved, and it can only be achieved after re-solid solution treatment and quenching aging.
The 6082 aluminum plate is an aluminum sheet which can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has medium strength, good welding performance and corrosion resistance. It is mainly used in transportation and structural engineering industry.
